America’s toughest sheriff’ Joe Arpaio seriously considering run for governor

After watching the campaign cash roll in during 2013, “America’s toughest sheriff” has announced he will seriously consider running for Arizona governor.
According to a press release issued Wednesday, the “Elect Sheriff Joe Arpaio” committee raised a record $3.5 million last year, the Huffington Post reported.
“Every four years, my supporters encourage me to run for governor,” the six-term Maricopa County Sheriff said. “Based on these fundraising numbers and knowing I could be competitive, I will have to give it serious consideration.”
“We continue to be blown away by the depth and breadth of support for Sheriff Joe,” Chad Willems, Arpaio’s campaign manager, said in the release, the article continued. “These numbers tell the story that the sheriff and his policies are more popular than ever.”
And Arpaio is popular, especially with the nation’s conservatives, despite his coming under frequent attacks for his enforcement tactics.
“According to the Associated Press, most of the contributions were made by out-of-state donors as critics of Arpaio tried and failed to force a recall election against the sheriff last year,” the Post said.
Republican Gov. Jan Brewer’s second and final term ends in 2014, and it is unknown if she will challenge Arizona’s term limit laws.
But Arpaio needs to decide soon as the filing deadline is the end of May with the primary scheduled for Aug. 26, and the field of GOP candidates, including perhaps actor Steven Seagal, for governor is growing.
